Tecno T3, the second generation Tecno android dual sims smartphone from Tecno Telecom Ltd is a real beauty to behold. It is a phone that beautifully blends glamor with functionality. Slim, rounded corners, with gorgeous 3.5 inch capacitive touchscreen of 480 x 320 resolution. The only hardware buttons on this phone are the volume keys and the power button. Other buttons are software touch buttons situated just below the screen. They are the Home, Menu, Back, & Search Keys. This is one phone that will very much appeal to the students in tertiary institutions who need smartphones to access the Internet while not compromising the multimedia aspects.
We laid our hands on one and brings you a short review of the phone.
OS: Android 2.3.5
Display: 3.5 inch Capacitive touchscreen
Resolution: 320 x 480
Video: MP4, 3GP, (other formats with bundled Mobo Player)
Audio: MP3, MIDI, AMR, WAV,ACC
Memory: 256Mb RAM, 176Mb internal, 8Gb MicroSD included
The T3 runs on android Gingerbread 2.3.5. The touch interface is smooth and flows freely. Tecno has gone an extra mile by applying a skin on the basic android UI. Shall we call it “Tecno UI”. The UI is really good and friendly. The icons have a unique square shapes with rounded edges and the menu scrolls sideways rather than up-down as we have in Tecno T1. The 800MHz processor makes the phone fast and very responsive. However, we noticed that as the internal memory fills up, the phone slows down somewhat. This is improved by moving apps into the memory card and freeing the internal memory which is only 176Mb (just like we have in Samsung Galaxy Y duos). The RAM of 256Mb that comes with the phone is adequate only for simple multitasking like playing the music, and alternating between surfing the web and writing a document. Copy and paste is a joy on this phone as in other gingerbread running androids.
Multimedia and Social Media
The phone comes factory fitted with a Facebook app and Mobo Player and a host of other useful apps. The Facebook app is really good but we could not update it on the review unit we have even though there was an update for it. This may be peculiar to our review unit only.
The inbuilt FM Radio really works well and the video player handles MP4 as well as 3gp videos. The Mobo player extends the functionality of the phone by handling most other video formats. The music player is good and the sound production is average. There is a voice recorder app also on the phone.
Camera on the Tecno T3 is 3MP and is far superior to the T1. It is really good for a Tecno. There is also a front facing VGA camera for video calling and Skype which comes preinstalled.
Dual Sims & Connectivity
The Tecno T3 is a dual sims smartphone. The sims are always in active dual standby. The sim 1 slot is for 3G + GSM while sim 2 slot is for 2G + GSM.
Bluetooth is flawless, the wifi function is good and like all gingerbread androids, it comes with wifi hotspot capability. Receptivity of the phone is good and it hardly loses network even when the signal is low. Opera mini and UC Browser are preinstalled.
By the way, the phone comes with 8Gb memory card which is more than adequate for multimedia and storage needs. It also comes with the usual Tecno’s 12+1month nationwide warranty.
How it compares.
There are practically no phones with the features of Tecno T3 in the same price range. Its elder brother, the Tecno T1 with broadly the same features plus a camera flash costs NGN 18,500.00 while Samsung Galaxy Y duos with the same internal memory but less screen size (has only 3.14 inch screen) costs NGN 24,500.00. We can also mention the LG L3 E405 costing NGN19,000.00 and having broadly the same specs with the Galaxy Y duos.
Sadly for us, we have to return the phone after a week. It was borrowed for the review.
So, which would you buy? Well, depending on who you are and your pocket. But we must say that the Tecno T3 is very tempting with its large screen, and highly affordable price of NGN 14,500.00.
